- The natural history of dysphagia associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) has not been systematically studied, despite its common presentationin infancy and through childhood. Complications frequently include oesophagitis, respiratory disease, bradycardia, failure to thrive, food refusal, coughing and gagging, sleep disturbances, breakdowns in mother-child interaction, dental erosion and poor communication skills, especially delayed phonological acquistion. this study investigated the clinical outcome of one infant, identified at two weeks of age as dysphagic, with apnea and cyanosis in the absence of neurological disorder. It aimed to discover wether early developmental problems would dissipate with speech pathology and gastroenterological intervention. A longitudinal single-subject research design was used over four years. Symptoms in the medical history consistant with the literature were identified for the early detection of GORD and its optimal interdisciplinary management will be outlined.
